Hamba kahle, KK

THOSE who tried to humiliate him only succeeded in glorifying him.

The passing of Zambia’s founding president Kenneth Kaunda (KK) marks the end of an epoch.

The historical significance of KK lies in the fact that he established an African presence in the global political arena.

He was a man who embodied Africa with passion, fidelity and courage against the forces of racism and Western domination.

KK was a man of passion.

Yet, at the same time, he was a renaissance man.

KK was the most disciplined African leader in the history of the continent that millions of people have come to revere him.

He won the respect of the people by the simplicity and austerity of his life.

He was a man of peace in a world at war. He valiantly over decades fought relentlessly to eradicate racism in the subcontinent.

KK has departed and all over southern Africa, there is a feeling of having been left desolate and forlorn.

Seldom does human history record an individual who was once a warrior, an icon and a caring leader and yet again a deeply humble and intensely human being. It is this quality of an all-embracing warmth that stands out most prominent in his character.

KK exceptionally personified the Prince of Peace and Justice in Africa, whose life affects the continent and all of humanity. He was a great African nationalist but at the same time, he was a leader of international stature.

He gave refuge and shelter to our leaders when the struggle for liberation intensified.

He was our emancipator from bondage and serfdom. His death will serve to remind generations of Africa’s people of a generous and fearless personality and of a life of nobility and patriotism, service and sacrifice.

In her hour of sorrow, Africa can be proud of giving the continent a man of imperishable renown and is confident that his example will be a source of inspiration and strength in the fulfilment of her destiny. KK will remain a perennial symbol of individual excellence. Hamba kahle, KK. | FAROUK ARAIE Benoni
